Making Skills Visible—and Connecting Them to Opportunity

Across the country, states, educators, employers, and workforce organizations are rethinking how skills are recognized, communicated, and connected to opportunity. As a founding partner of C-BEN’s Center for Skills, SOLID is helping advance this work and strengthen the practices and infrastructure needed to support a more connected, skills-based ecosystem.

As part of this broader effort, Making Military Skills Visible: A State Guide to Including Military-Connected Residents in Talent Marketplaces, co-authored by SOLID Vice President Lauren Runco Bevilacqua and Sytease Geib, explores how states can better recognize and represent skills developed through military learning and experience. The guide offers practical recommendations for making those skills visible, portable, and useful across education, workforce, and talent systems.

While the guide focuses on military-connected populations, the challenge—and opportunity—is much broader. People develop valuable skills through education, training, employment, military and public service, and many other experiences. Building a more connected skills ecosystem requires ways to recognize and validate those skills, represent them in trusted and portable forms, and connect them to meaningful opportunities.

This work reflects both SOLID’s longstanding expertise and the larger mission of the Center for Skills: advancing approaches that help ensure skills, wherever and however they are developed, can be understood, trusted, and put to use across education and workforce ecosystems.
